Structural Steel Fabrication: How to Reduce Your Project Costs

Structural steel fabrication turns raw beams, channels, angles and plates into components prepared for your project. By combining steel supply with cutting, drilling, welding and surface treatment, buyers can reduce the local processing and handling costs that follow material delivery.

After your steel arrives, who will cut it to length, drill the bolt holes, weld the connection plates and apply the protective coating?

If you arrange each operation separately, a competitive steel price can become a much more expensive project.

For buyers with approved drawings, ordering steel with the required processing completed before shipment can reduce local fabrication work, repeated handling and supplier coordination.

What Processing Can Be Completed Before Shipment?

Different projects require different levels of processing. The main stages are:

Stage What It Includes
Drawing and material review Confirm steel sections, grades, dimensions, connections and quantities
Cutting Cut beams, channels, angles, tubes and plates to the required shapes and lengths
Drilling Prepare bolt holes and connection holes according to approved drawings
Assembly and welding Fit and weld base plates, end plates, stiffeners, brackets and other components
Surface treatment Prepare the steel surface and apply the specified paint system or hot-dip galvanizing
Inspection and packing Check dimensions, identify components and prepare marked bundles for shipment

You can order only the processing you need—from cut-to-length sections to fabricated beams and columns.

Look Beyond the Steel Price per Ton

When comparing suppliers, ask a practical question:

What will this steel cost by the time it is ready for installation?

A raw material quotation may leave several expenses for you to arrange locally:

  • Transport to and from a fabrication workshop.
  • Unloading, storage and repeated handling.
  • Cutting, drilling, welding and coating.
  • Labour, equipment and consumables.
  • Material offcuts, inspection and corrections.

There is also the time spent coordinating separate suppliers. A delay at the cutting workshop can affect welding, coating and delivery to the construction site.

Combining material supply and processing creates an opportunity to manage these steps within one coordinated order.

Better Material Planning

When the cutting list is available before procurement, stock lengths can be selected around the required components. This can improve material utilisation and reduce avoidable offcuts.

Less Processing After Arrival

Members supplied with the specified lengths, holes and welded connections require less local workshop preparation. For structures designed for bolted assembly, this can also reduce site fabrication.

Easier Identification and Handling

Component marks matched to drawings and packing lists help the receiving team find the right members and organise installation.

Example: Steel Procurement for a Warehouse

This is an illustrative scenario, not a completed WANDON project or a verified savings claim.

A contractor needs H-beams, channels, angles and connection plates for a warehouse. The approved drawings specify different member lengths, bolt-hole positions and welded end plates.

Option 1: Buy standard-length raw steel.

After the materials arrive, the contractor transports them to a local workshop. The workshop prepares the cutting list, cuts and drills the members, produces the connection plates and completes the welding.

The components then need surface treatment, identification and delivery to the construction site.

The contractor manages each stage and pays the associated processing and handling costs.

Option 2: Buy steel processed to the drawings.

Material selection and fabrication are coordinated before shipment. Members are cut and drilled, plates are fitted and welded, and the agreed surface treatment is completed.

The components are marked and packed with a corresponding component list. After arrival, the contractor can focus on receiving, checking and installation, together with any remaining site work.

The second option carries a higher purchase price because it includes fabrication. However, it can reduce the local expenses that the first quotation leaves out.

The right comparison is the total delivered project cost—not raw steel against fabricated steel on price per ton alone.

Freight must also be included: fabricated assemblies may occupy more shipping space than unprocessed sections. Actual savings depend on the design, packing efficiency, destination and local processing costs.

Choose the Supply Level That Fits Your Business

A contractor without its own fabrication workshop may benefit from a more complete component package.

An established fabricator may prefer raw sections or selected processing, such as cutting and drilling, while keeping welding and coating in-house.

A flexible supplier should help you compare these options rather than assume every buyer needs the same package.

WANDON: Structural Steel Supply and Custom Fabrication

Wandong Steel Structure-Workshop

WANDON connects structural steel supply with custom fabrication for steel construction projects.

Our roots in the Laiwu steel industry and our strategic partnership with Laiwu Steel support an understanding of both materials and downstream project requirements.

Customers can discuss:

  • Raw steel supply: H-beams, I-beams, channels, angles and other agreed materials.
  • Processed sections: Cut-to-length and drilled steel members.
  • Fabricated components: Beams, columns, brackets and welded assemblies made to approved drawings.
  • Project packages: Steel structures with agreed roof, wall and connection materials.

We coordinate the material specifications, processing scope, surface treatment, inspection and packing requirements before production.

From production to project requirements, we understand both sides.

Send us your drawings or steel list. We’ll recommend a suitable supply and processing solution for your project.
